Organic acid-based adhesives have emerged as a promising sustainable alternative to traditional synthetic adhesives, such as urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate in the wood composite industry. Derived from renewable sources like plants, animals, and microbes, these adhesives offer the excellent environmental benefit such as biodegradability and non-toxicity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of various organic acid-based adhesives, including citric acid, tannic acid, maleic acid, lactic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, para-Toluenesulfonic acid, itaconic acid, and fumaric acid. It discusses their chemical characteristics, bonding mechanisms, and performance in applications such as plywood, particleboard, and fiberboard. The paper also explores advancements in characterization and development, as well as challenges such as water resistance, bond strength, cost, and scalability. Potential applications in sustainable industries, along with future research directions, are highlighted. The integration of organic acid-based adhesives into industries focused on sustainability and the circular economy demonstrates their growing importance. Despite current limitations, ongoing research and innovation suggest a promising future for these adhesives in achieving high-performance, eco-friendly bonding solutions across various sectors.
