Observation and Forecasting of Rip Current Generation in Haeundae Beach, Korea Plan and Experiment

Szczecin, Poland, ISSN 0749-0208 The Korean Meteorological Administration started a research project which is developing techniques for reducing damages from rip currents as well as observing rip current to protect beach-goers throughout defining causes and mechanisms for rip current and predict rip current generations. A two year research project (June 2010 to May 2012) consists of two major parts; one is developing forecasting tools for rip current generations based on ubiquitous sensor network technique and the other building an automatic warning system for beach-goers safety. A forecasting program based on GUI has been developing with observation data which were obtained from July 6th to August 18111, 2010. Validations for forecasting program comparing to rip current observations will be followed in the second project year (June 2011 to May 2012). To accomplish the second year's mission, real-time data transit technique for coastal condition will be developed and dye test will be performed. In addition to those works, a new automatic warning system using RFID tube will be developed. A total system including observing, forecasting rip currents in Haeundae Beach which will be achieved throughout this study will provide basic data for rip current generation in terms of oceanophysical phenomenon as well as improve economical values of costal/ocean monitoring system and warning system. Moreover, marine disaster prevention technique will be advanced with the results of this study.
