The constant development of novel nanocomposites aims to mitigate the presence of toxic dyes in aquatic environments, thereby ensuring environmental safety. In this context, this study investigates the efficacy of chitosan (CS) based silver nitroprusside nanoparticles (CS-AgNP NPs) in degrading dyes. The degradation efficiency of CS-AgNP NPs on methylene blue (MB) reached 99.4 % within 180 min under the conditions of 25 mg/L of MB with a medium pH of 4. Radical trapping experiments identified center dot O2-, h+, and OH center dot as the primary species involved in the photodegradation process. The experimental data were satisfactorily described by a first-order kinetic model. Additionally, cyclic tests revealed the structural stability and reusability of CS-AgNP NPs. Furthermore, the toxicological impact of MB, before and after removal, was assessed both in vivo and in vitro. The CS-AgNP NPs treated MB dye solution demonstrated no significant toxicity to Artemia salina and NIH3T3, suggesting the potential of CS-AgNP NPs for MB photodegradation applications.
