The Deictic Contrastive Interpretation of Pronoun-Noun Constructions and Their Syntactic Structure in Korean

This paper discusses the semantic aspect, i.e., the availability of deictic contrastive interpretation, of Pronoun-Noun Constructions (PNCs) in Korean, providing a variety of empirical data. The study shows that Korean PNCs can yield a deictic contrastive reading in an appropriate context as in Choi (2014), which observes the identical phenomenon in Greek PNCs. In particular, in the current analysis, this study demonstrates that Korean PNC allows some singular personal pronouns as its member contrary to a general assumption. Furthermore, the study shows that such PNCs can deliver the deictic contrastive meaning. Based on empirical evidence drawn from Korean PNCs, this study proposes the new syntactic structure of Korean PNC that receives the deictic contrastive interpretation.
