This essay seeks to explore Walter Benjamin’s concept of “truth content,” as emphasized in his essay “On Goethe’s Elective Affinities,” through an analysis of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Elective Affinities and Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life.” The discussion begins with a summary and analysis of Goethe’s Elective Affinities, with a particular focus on Goethe’s use of the chemical term “elective affinity.” In chemistry, elective affinity refers to the inevitability and transformative power of connections between chemical elements, a concept Goethe employs metaphorically to explore the complexities of love, passion, and the forces that both bind and separate individuals in the novel. The essay then examines Walter Benjamin’s critical reading of Goethe’s work, illustrating how Benjamin uses the concept of elective affinity to uncover the “truth content” hidden beneath the interplay of mythic fate and material forces. Through his intricate and, at times, contradictory analysis, Benjamin polemically delineates the role of criticism as distinct from mere commentary.
