Fly ash is usually used to improve the durability of concretc is composed of magnesium, calcium and unburned carbon. In this study, fly ash from cogcneration plant was analyzed and mixed in starch surface size in order to improve the physical properties of paper. Main components of fly ash are silicon and aluminum. Its chemical structure are mullite and quartz based on silicon dioxide and aluminosilicate. In surface sizing, formation of uniform layer improves physical properties of paper as the vulnerable part of paper could be reinforced. As dosage of fly ash increases, sizing solution is uniformly built up in the surface of paper and surface sizing with fly ash has better performance in burst strength than common surface sizing based on starch. Therefore, it is assumed that fly ash is available as a pigment in surface sizing to improve the coverage of starch film on paper.
