The present study aimed to compare the effects of a laughter-based exercise program and an exercise-only program conducted three times a week for five weeks on the respiratory and mental health of patients with pneumoconiosis. This was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group, and a non-synchronized design. The experimental group (20 subjects) underwent the laughter-based exercise program, while the control group (20 subjects) received the exercise-only intervention. The variables were measured before and after the intervention. There was no significant difference in respiratory variables between the two groups, but peripheral capillary oxygen saturation was significantly improved only in the experimental group after the intervention. Subjective dyspnea perception was significantly improved in both groups. Among the mental health-related variables, there was no significant difference in depression between the groups, but anxiety and quality of life in patients with respiratory disease significantly improved in the experimental group than in the control group. Therefore, the laughter-based exercise intervention was found to significantly improve mental health and to have a partial effect on the respiratory health of patients with pneumoconiosis. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2019.
