Divine Memory and Still Point in Four Quartets

초록

T. S. Eliot implied that “memory is indispensable for contemplating still point” in Four Quartets (Manganiel 105). In the light of this memory, divine memory and still point in Four Quartets are the ultimate symbols of the experience of God described by the paradox as the contradiction. The way to meet God in Four Quartets suggests the internal and dark world of mind like humility and negation. However, it is impossible for human being to reach still point because his desire is too strong. In Four Quartets, memory is a key to reach divine memory and still point. Divine memory gives us some messages of the relation between God and man. Even though “Eliot was influenced by Bergson’s pure memory” in writing poetry, he chose the tradition of divine memory inherited from western philosophy including Augustine and Dante. Divine memory suggests “to expand love beyond desire” in Four Quartets. Divine memory that can cause the liberation do not move itself, is like still point that is itself still but moving others.
