A novel bio-based waterproofing agent with lignosulfonate-encapsulated paraffin (LEP) against water absorption in wood-based composite

The synthesis of a novel bio-based waterproofing agent from recycled lignosulfonate not only addresses the dimensional instability of wood-based composites in humid environments, but also aligns with growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly construction materials. This study investigated the anti-moisture performance of a novel bio-based waterproofing agent for oriented strand boards (OSB). The stability and particle size diameter (PSD) of lignosulfonate-encapsulated paraffin (LEP) was analyzed, which exhibited better stability and a lower PSD value in comparing with paraffin wax. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the spherical structure of LEP particles, with lignosulfonate forming a clear outer layer encapsulated the paraffin particle. Dimensional stability of different types of OSB demonstrated significant reduction in thickness swelling (TS) and water absorption (WA) with increasing bio-based waterproofing agent content, which achieved that the highest TS value of 7.36 % was well below the standard value of 20 % and represented an improvement of approximately 63.20 %. Furthermore, mechanical performance tests indicated that the bio-based waterproofing agent did not reduce the modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and internal bonding (IB) of OSB. It was indicated that the minimum values of MOR and MOE exceeded standard value by 19.86 % and 22.33 %, and an average IB value increased at least 173.38 %. These findings displayed the superior dimensional stability and mechanical performance of OSB with addition of bio-based waterproofing agent compared to conventional methods, providing a high value-added opportunity for lignosulfonate and broadening the potential application of wood-based composites in sustainable construction.
