초록

With the evolutionary shift of ecocritical perspective from deep ecological one to social constructionist one in the recent years, ecocriticism’s treatment of traditional nature writing has also changed from preoccupation to negligence. The position of the social constructionists tends to reject mainstream ecocriticism’s focus on the genres of nature writing, because they doubt that these genres are capable of representing the complex interactions between environmentalism and political choices, socioeconomic structures. Literary environmentalism that is the textual manifestation of a larger cultural practice and of an ensemble of such interactions exposes such complex socio-political elements in the 19th century nature writings, landscape paintings, and landscape photographs. Literary environmentalism reveals not only ‘Nature’s Nation’ ideology but also intentional exclusion of Native Americans in the works of John Muir, one of the iconic 19th century nature writers.
