Economic loss of cyber terror: DDoS attack in South Korea

On 7th of July 2009, South Korea met a terrible disaster which had been believed to be possible in SF movies. Starting on 7th of July 2009, several major websites in South Korea were overwhelmed simultaneously by distributed denial-of-service attacks launched from more than 20,000 zombie computers. This paper summarizes an outline of the distributed denial-of-service attacks in South Korea and analyzes the economic loss caused by this attack. The proposed model in this paper could be used to estimate a potential economic risk of distributed denial-of-service attack on the internet-based business infrastructures in various industries and support decision makers for budget planning of security investments. © 2013 International Information Institute.
