A new series of Pb-based 1212 cuprates (Pb<inf>0.5</inf>V<inf>0.5</inf>)Sr<inf>2</inf>(Ca<inf>1-x</inf>Y <inf>x</inf>)Cu<inf>2</inf>O<inf>z</inf> (x = 0.3-0.7) has been synthesized in an oxidizing atmosphere. The compounds that contain appropriate amount of yttrium (x ≤ 0.4) exhibit superconductivity in the as-prepared samples. It is also observed that the superconductivity is either enhanced or induced in the as-prepared samples (x ≤ 0.6) by post-annealing in air at 800°C and then quenching. Superconductivity with T<inf>c</inf> (zero resistivity) of 61 K is observed for a sample of nominal composition (Pb<inf>0.5</inf>V<inf>0.5</inf>)Sr<inf>2</inf>(Ca<inf>0.7</inf>Y <inf>0.3</inf>)Cu<inf>2</inf>O<inf>z</inf>. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
