We study in detail semi-inclusive charmless B --> piX decays such as (B) over bar (0) --> pi(+/-(0)) X, B-0 --> pi(+/-(0)) X and B+/- --> pi(+/-(0)) X, where X does not contain a charm (anti)quark. We find that the process (B) over bar (0) --> pi(-) X (B-0 --> pi(+) X) can be particularly useful for the determination of the CKM matrix element [V-ub]. We calculate and present the branching ratio (BR) of (B) over bar (0) --> pi(-) X as a function of [V-ub], with an estimate of possible uncertainties. It is expected that the BR is of the order of 10(-4). Our estimation indicates that one can phenomenologically determine [V-ub] with a reasonable accuracy by measuring the BR of (B) over bar (0) --> pi(-) X (B-0 --> pi(+) X).
