초록

Cheongpheongsa, a Buddhist temple was rebuilt as Zen temple with the spatial characteristics of Zen garden by Ja-Hyun Lee(1061~1125) in the middle of Koryo dynasty. The purpose of this research was to explore the historical evidence concerned with Zen garden of Cheongpheongsa through ancient writings of Koryo and Chosun era. Judging from the layout and location of man-made facilities, Cheongpyeongsa's spatial structures are divided into seven different zones of Khyengsung Am, Sundong Am, Bokhee Am, Gusong Falls, South Pond(Youngji), South Stream, and main Buddhist Temple. They are functionally subdivided into the two parts of Buddhist prayer and recreation.Sundong zone was mainly used as an important place for meditation and prayer, and within the zone the Sik Am was representative of the hermitages. The most remarkable part in this Zen garden is the South Pond which the shadow of Kyeonsung Am fall on. The spatial composition of this Zen garden took good advantage of topographical elements such as stream, valley, fall, and bread-flat rock. This Zen Garden is a valuable place of historic interest, which could not be discovered in any other mountainous temples in Korea.
