Effects of cosolvent ratio on fiber characteristics of SwBKP during alkali-cosolvent swelling system

Alkali swelling pretreatment can be helpful to reduce the energy consumption for grinding during the production of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) by weakening the internal bonding between fibrils. To improve alkaline pretreatment efficiency, dimetyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was applied as co-solvent. Contribution of the cosolvent on fiber characteristics was investigated with softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP). For alkali treatment in H<inf>2</inf>O-DMSO solvents, fiber width and curl was increased with increasing DMSO cosolvent ratio to 30% and then leveled-off. In addition, the increase in WRV by alkali treatment was attenuated by DMSO cosolvent addition. Comparing with the previous results, it could be concluded that DMSO could promote swelling of pulp fibers. Above 30% of DMSO mixing ratio, the crystalline structure of pulp fibers showed the mixed pattern of cellulose II and cellulose III.
