The present study aims to investigate the dependences of the attenuation and the backscatter coefficients on the frequency, the bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and the trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) in 16 trabecularbone-mimicking phantoms consisting of water-saturated cellular aluminum foams. The attenuation coefficient increased approximately linearly with increasing frequency at frequencies from 0.2 to 0.6 MHz, while the backscatter coefficient increased nonlinearly with increasing frequency. The attenuation and backscatter coefficients increased with increasing BV/TV over a limited range of BV/TV values from 1.9 to 10.1% and with increasing Tb.Th over a limited range of Tb.Th values from 217 to 313 mu m, showing Pearson's correlation coefficients ranging from 0.54 to 0.80. In contrast, a scattering model based on velocity fluctuations in a binary mixture predicted that both the attenuation and the backscatter coefficients exhibited nonlinear dependences on the BV/TV and the Tb.Th.
