Determination of the Tc by using the interaction between a permanent magnet and a high-Tc superconductor

We present a simple method to determine the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of high-temperature superconductors based on the interaction between a permanent magnet and a superconducting sample. The experimental setup allows measurement of the time dependences of the temperature of a sample and its magnetic levitation force between a superconductor and a magnet that is connected to the plate of a digital electronic balance through a plastic tube. The present technique has proven to be satisfactory for determining the Tc for both bulk and powder superconducting samples within an uncertainty of about ±1.5 K.
