초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of the child-rearing experiences of fathers who took paternity leave to take care of infants, toddlers, or preschoolers. For the research method, Colaizzi's framework (1978), which is one of the phenomenological research methods, was applied. The subjects in this study were 10 selected fathers who took paternity leave to take care of their children for six months or more. The interviews were conducted over approximately 10 months from August, 2014 to May, 2015. When the collected data on the child-rearing experiences of the fathers were analyzed, there were 80 significant statements, 20 semantic components, nine themes, and four theme clusters. The core category for the nature of the child-rearing experiences of the fathers was "feeling instinctive paternal love" and the four theme clusters were "overcoming prejudice, " "jumping into the sea of clumsy rearing, " "being unexpectedly drawn into a whirlpool, " and "building identity as a rearer." Finally, there were nine themes: "one's own bias", "facing up to the prejudice of the world, " "imitating first-time mothers, " "understanding how to take care of children", "getting exhausted mentally and physically, " "being cut off from society, " "projecting one's own inner conflicts onto children, " "priceless happy memory, " and "being aware of roles as a man." A family-friendly child-rearing system should be set up to guarantee parental leave and to increase employer- supported childcare centers. It will also be advisable to designate a child-rearing day. © 2017 International Information Institute.
