Phylogenetic Relationship and Genetic Variation among Oryza Species revealed by AFLP Analysis

AFLP markers were successfully employed to detect genetic relationship and genetic variation within and between Oryza species. Analysis of 59 accessions of Oryza species with six AFLP primer combinations detected a total number of 715 polymorphic bands. In the study of genetic variation among Oryza species, high polymorphisms were detected within and between Oryza species. The genetic distances (GDs), between species were higher than the GDs within species. The phylogenetic tree recognized two major groups at 66% genetic similarity. Group I consists of only the AA genome species of the Sativa complex, and Group II consists of BB, CC, EE and BBCC genome species of the Officinalis complex. The accessions from the same species were mostly grouped in the same subclusters and the species having same genome constitution showed close relationship to each other. The AFLP markers provide a powerful tool for the studying genetic relationship and genetic variation within and between Oryza species. The assessment of genetic relationship and genetic variation among Oryza species in this study will be helpful to the studies of rice breeding programs.
