여성, 그녀들의 타자성 극복을 위한 희생 제의로서의 『가장자리』(The Verge)

초록

This paper analyzes The Verge, written by a feminist playwright Susan Glaspell in 1921, by applying the process of a sacrifice rite of anthropology. This play contains a series of metaphors and symbols in order to perform experimental strategies of Glaspell. Through the course of play like a sacrifice ritual which includes the process of separation, transition and incorporation, she intends to show women's willingness to achieve the equal right and liberty in a society. The female protagonist Claire is shown as the most unique woman with creativity. Moreover she rejects all the responsibilities that a patriarchal society imposes on her. Claire kills her lover, Tom as the scapegoat at the end of the play as if she is a shaman for the sacrifice ritual. Glaspell represents Tom as an embodiment of social contradiction and vice. In this aspect, Claire can overcome the otherness and the outness, furthermore, breaks the forms and patterns of society in the end. Also, readers/spectators are able to have an opportunity to open toward new perspectives and challenge the ways of thinking in a patriarchal society.
