A novelty cathodic electrochemiluminescent recognition technique was constructed successfully with the imprinted polypyrrole surface on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the direct detection of norfloxacin without additional luminophore. Norfloxacin (NFLX), the analyte target, acting simultaneously as the imprinted template molecule and as the ECL luminophore to generate ECL with S<inf>2</inf>O<inf>8</inf>2−. The incorporation of MWCNTs significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity, thereby amplifying the ECL signal and improving sensitivity. The recognition sites of the imprinted polypyrrole surfaces contribute for the selective recognition of NFLX, which in fine produces light emission upon electrical stimulation with up to 36-fold higher than that on non-imprinted electrode (NIP/MWCNT/GCE). This finding demonstrates the rapid and efficient analytical capability of the imprinted polypyrrole for NFLX-specific detection. Notably, this work not only propose a rapid, cost-effective and luminophore-free methodology for the direct detection of antibiotics, but also opens up the possibility of developing new ECL recognition technique for determining biomolecules, drugs, pesticide residues. © 2025
