초록
Currently, one of the challenges still facing Ethiopia is how to feed its ever increasing population. This paper has examined the impact of non-farm activities on farm households’ food security; and the push and pulls factors of non-farm activities. The study employed descriptive statistics and Tobit regression model. The result shows that non-farm activities have a positive and statistically significant impact on household’s food security. The main factors that limit farm households’ participation in non-farm activities are lack of finance, lack of experience, lack of skill, and lack of confidence. The main Factors that lead farm households to decide to participate in the non-farm activities are low income from farm, land inadequacy, the need to minimize risk associated with crop failure, high return in labor/investment, and lack of land. Hence, promoting farm and non-farm linkages, removal of entry barriers faced by the poor, and expansion of opportunities for diversification are important areas of intervention.
