Nonionic 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone/methacryloxy silicone (VP/MS) copolymers were prepared using a free radical reaction in which various molecular weights of vinyl-terminated silicones (VS) were used as cross-linkers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that those copolymers were synthesized successfully. The glass transition temperatures and the thermal stability were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Both the glass transition temperature and the initial temperature of the mass loss increased as the molecular weight of the cross-linkers decreased. A scanning electron microscopy/X-ray energy dispersive (SEM/EDS) study revealed that much more silicone domains were observed on the surface of the cast film of the copolymer than on the film/glass interface. The orientation of the silicone might be a factor through which the interfacial energy of the copolymer film is minimized.
