Electrical conduction behavior of layered perovskite La1-xBa1+xGaO4-δ

Layered perovskite oxides of the system La1-xBa1+xGaO4-delta were synthesized and their electrical, conduction behavior was studied. The oxides of the composition range 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.2 were analyzed as a single orthorhombic phase with a K2NiF4-type structure. In the presence of water vapor, proton conduction was observed due to the incorporation of water into the oxygen vacancies for these oxides. Below 350degreesC, La0.8Ba1.2GaO3.9 was considered to be a pure proton conductor and the activation energy for proton conduction was measured as 0.77. eV. In a dry atmosphere, it exhibited mixed conduction consisting of oxygen ions and holes at a high oxygen partial pressure, P(O-2), and showed only oxygen-ion conduction at an intermediate and low P(O-2).
