Nano ionic self-assembly comprising Poly(ethylene imine) and 4-(Phenylazo)benzoic acid and its temperature and UV-responsive properties

Ion pair self-assembly (IPSAM) composed of PEI and 4-(Phenylazo)benzoic acid (PBA) was developed as a temperature and UV-responsive drug carrier. IPSAM could be formed when the molar ratio of the amino to the carboxyl group in the preparation was 7/3 to 9/1. The azo-benzene group of PBA could change its structure reversibly between trans and cis configurations, depending on whether to irradiate UV light. PEI/PBA ion pair exhibited an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior and increased from 21 to 37 degrees C in proportion to the PBA content. According to the tensiometer study, the PEI/PBA ion pair was amphiphilic and surface-active. The 1H NMR and FT-IR spectrum confirmed the interaction between amino group of PEI and carboxyl group of PBA. IPSAM was found to be circular on the TEM photo. The release of dye loaded in IPSAM was temperature-sensitive and took place in proportion to the release medium temperature, if it was above the UCST. The release was promoted by UV irradiation possibly due to the photoisomerization induced hydrophilicity and solubility in an aqueous solution of PBA, and the UV irradiation-induced release promotion increased with increasing the release medium temperature.
