The Iss-ki Eps-ki Construction in Korean -A Construction-Based Approach

2016. The Iss-ki Eps-ki Construction in Korean: A Construction-Based Approach. Studies in Humanities, Vol. 49, September 2016. The ‘iss-ki eps-ki’ Construction (IEC) in Korean attracts empirical and theoretical interests due to its complex morph-syntactic and pragmatic properties. One of the morph-syntactic properties is that the suffix -ki is attached to the two copula verbs, iss- and eps-, which subcategorize for the CP. The importance of this suffix is that it only selects a base verbal stem in the IEC. Pragmatically, the IEC as an alternative question functions as a reminder to the listener that he is responsible for the (in-)occurrence of the event/situation described by the speaker’s utterance including the IEC. To account for the properties, we claim that the morph-syntactic properties of the IEC have a systematic relationship with the pragmatic properties. Further, we propose an IEC rule with a few constraints on morph-syntactic and pragmatic components under the Construction-Based Grammar to clarify how the IEC can have such relationships. This analysis will allow us to give a neat explanation for the IEC in Korean.
