초록

The 1930s was a period of conversion from silent films to sound films. Films at this time had to undergo a transition in various aspects due to the emergence of sound. Such a change also influenced ‘acting’ significantly. Along with the introduction of sound in films, ‘acting’ had to deviate from the previous mode of expression in silent films and seek a new mode of expression to suit sound films. Films adapted to sound in the transition period of the 1930s, and in this context, ‘acting’ is an important theme that reflects the most delicate, sophisticated, and detailed changes of cinematic expression. Therefore, this study will focus on how ‘realism’ of Hollywood and ‘acting’ of Hollywood classics changed during the settlement of sound in sound films after the emergence of sound films. Frank Capra (1897-1991) is an excellent example when discussing this period. As one of the most active directors in the U.S. in the 1930s and 1940s, he is appreciated for presenting a paragon of narratives in classic Hollywood films. Capra’s films from the 1930s to 1940s will be divided into two categories for analysis. The first period is the mid-1930s, a period of transition caused by the introduction of sound. The second period is from the late 1930s to 1940s, when sound was settling in films. <It Happened One Night, 1934>, <Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, 1936>, and <Lost Horizon, 1937> from the first period and <You Can’t Take It With You, 1938>, <Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, 1939>, <Meet John Doe, 1941>, and <It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946> from the second period will be given as specific examples to discuss how ‘acting’ changed. Therefore, this study will examine how realistic acting changed in Hollywood classics through major films by Frank Capra in the 1930s and 1940s. Moreover, it aims to present a new perspective to understand how the concept of Hollywood classics was formed in the ‘historical aspect of acting.’
