초록

The purpose of this essay is to analyzed the nature and aspects of Japanese foreign economic policies during the 1990s utilizing the three intertwined hypotheses: pro-active, Asianization, and multilateralism. Area of interest is Japanese international policies in the financial sector. Post-war Japan, which had maintained neo-mercantilist policy stances as well as intended isolation from the international financial market, emerged as the largest creditor country in the international financial market after the Plaza Accord in 1985, along with its growth as the second largest economic system in the world during the 1980s. The main argument of this article is that, as a result, Japan actively began to seek influences that conformed to its international status, and particularly, tried to initiate the restructuring of the Asian financial order in a varie쇼 of systematic ways including the enhancement of multilateralism.
