How Digital Transformation Promotes Corporate Innovation Performance in Pharmaceutical Enterprises: The Mediating Role of Dynamic Capabilities

초록

Digital transformation is a pivotal strategy for pharmaceutical enterprises seeking to sustain competitive advantages and achieve long-term development. From a dynamic capability perspective, this article examines the staged process of digital transformation - digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation - through a case study of Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical (Group) Co., Ltd. The study thoroughly analyzes how the company’s digital transformation impacts its innovation performance, emphasizing the mediating role of dynamic capabilities. Our findings indicate that dynamic capabilities must be built throughout the digital transformation journey, although each stage emphasizes different dimensions of these capabilities. Furthermore, the study reveals that digital transformation strengthens innovation capabilities of pharmaceutical companies and facilitates both product and process innovation through dynamic capabilities. The magnitude and nature of this impact, however, vary significantly across different stages of transformation. This study provides theoretical insights by conceptualizing the staged process of digital transformation and identifying the mediating role of dynamic capabilities in driving innovation outcomes. Practically, it offers strategic guidance for pharmaceutical firms seeking to enhance their innovation performance through targeted digital initiatives. The framework developed in this study may also serve as a reference for future empirical research or for application in other high-tech and regulated industries.
