Changes of Stand Characteristics Following Practice of Silvopastoral System by Thinning in a Pinus densiflora Stand in Hoengseong Area, Gangwon Province

Recognizing the necessity and potentiality of agroforestry, this study was carried out the practical experiment for a silvopastoral system in the 4.2ha of a natural Pinus densiflora forest, where three different levels of thinning intensity(A:120stems/ha, B:200stems/ha, and C:400stems/ha) were applied. After thinning, changes of stand characteristics were pursued for species composition, stand factors, canopy coverage, species diversity, light intensity, above ground biomass, and leaf area index(LAI). Even though it was varied by thinned species, Pinus densiflora was the most dominant species with 67~84%, followed by Quercus monglolica with around 5~17% of importance values. After thinning, average canopy coverage was 46% in Pasture A, 55% in Pasture B, and 68% in Pasture C, showing the higher thinning intensity was practiced, the lower canopy coverage was estimated. The canopy opening induced large number of new plant species from adjacent area, resulting the increase of species diversity, indicated that ecological succession has been taking place after gap formation of partial canopy open in the study area. But the thinning intensity level made a little differences in species diversity indices. In addition, as intensity of thinning level increased, relative light intensity and the biomass of understory vegetation increased, but LAI decreased.
