초록
This paper was written as an attempt to examine the scope and depth of the past 2 years of studies that took place in Korea in the field of premodern Japanese history. Results showed the following trends: a variety of studies on political history that focus on historical figures, an outstanding number of analyses on the history of foreign relations including that of Korea-Japan, growth in the area of cultural history stemming from fields other than Japanese historical studies, notable accomplishments from joint studies, and a strong representation of Japanese characteristics in political and cultural history over critical viewpoints in the history of foreign relations. Based on this survey, a direction is suggested towards a critical viewpoint. In doing so, a model was found in the academic society of Japanese historical studies. Once led by Marxist historical theories after the end of war in 1945,Japanese academia has shifted towards increased representation of the particularity of Japan with a rising popularity of the modernization theory that went side by side with economic growth in the 1960s. Since then, Marxism and modernization theory supplemented each other as social historical studies began to flourish. This model is what triggered the critical viewpoint in current historical studies. Historical studies in Korea is in a state of confusion caused by ideological conflict between the political left and right. This is also the case with Japanese historical studies.
