Study on Cases of English Writing Classes on Pre-service Teachers: Social Justice and Engaged Pedagogy through To Kill a Mockingbird

초록

This study aims to delineate how I actualizes a pedagogy, namely engaged pedagogy introduced by bell hooks, and utilizes teaching methodologies such as in-depth discussions and writing essays in literature classes through analyzing the cases in which I have taught To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee with theme of social justice and ethics for pre-service teachers. This essay also employs Martha C. Nussbaum’s Poetic Justice where she expounds how literary works, especially fictions, can enhance readers’ ethical sensitivity and understanding of social justice via providing readers ways to understand empathy or compassion in fictions. Then, the paper describes how discussions in class have focused on such themes as race, gender, class, coming-of-age fiction and ethics, Atticus’ idea of justice and its limit, description of classroom in 1930s and its educational implication, etc. In turn, the paper expounds how the classes also motivate students to write essays about those themes they discussed in the classrooms in terms of social justice and education.
