Analysis on Narrative of Fantasy Melo

This study analyzes the movie Ditto, the original (2000) and its 2022 remake to reveal how the fantasy elements provide deep insights into love, sacrifice, and human emotions rather than simply depicting pure love. Ditto has popularized the fantasy melo genre by maximizing the common themes of “unattainable love” and its “pain” with fantastical elements, the chaotic time travel that occurred through the wireless device. Through Deleuze’s theory of affect and time-image, this study closely examines the characteristics of fantasy elements in Ditto: First, the meaning of the function of the total lunar eclipse; second, the impact of the chaotic time travel that occurred through the wireless device on the psychological state of the characters and audience. This approach can help understand how the narrative conveys deep emotions rather than the “spectacle” of fantasy and provide useful research methods for analyzing other works of the fantasy melo genre.
