초록
The climate of the Samcheok area, Kangwon Province in the late 18th century showed very characteristic phenomenon of the Little Ice Age. That’s to say, it became droughty almost every year and rained quite often during the period from May to August. Especially, the cold rain often fell and it became foggy often as well. Thus the phenomenon of a low temperature often occurred during spring and summer. A climatic phenomenon like these were particularly conspicuous before 1791. Such an abnormal climate brought about natural disasters and in turn badly damaged the farming. People had a bad rice crop almost every year and thus suffered from a famine. As a result, people either sold cow and household goods, etc., or supported their life even by eating grass root. Moreover, famine caused social unrest such as the appearance of wandering people, the runaway of slaves, and the outbreak of epidemics, etc.
