Asian Subjectivity and Paradox of Hospitality

This paper aims at investigating the extent and history of exclusion of Asians from Western politic as well as discursive privation of spirit from Asian subjectivity. First, I take on Cho, Seung-Hui case as an epitome that illuminates how this logic of exclusion functions in the Western culture. In turn, by analyzing Chinese migrant workers' poems, I prove this discourse is not just cultural projection of contemporary mindset but come from a heritage of Western thoughts. Then to find one of the origins of heritage, I critically read Immanuel Kant's political writings about cosmopolitanism. This reading discloses how these writings embed the logic of exclusion of strangers from Western cosmopolitanism, disguised under the paradox of hospitality. In the end, I also envision a possible form of a community of those excluded Asians on global space.
