A Creative Sense in Kiyomizumonogatari: Focused on Realistic Criticism for a Confucian Ideal Society

초록

Kiyomizumonogatari was published in 1638 and is closely related to the mobility of Japanese social conditions early in the seventeenth century. Above all, it was apparent that the Shimabara Rebellion led by Christians in 1637 played a critical role in arousing the necessity of Confucian ruling system. Though Kiyomizumonogatari deals with many Confucian subject matters, there is a belief that the writer's sense of creation should be found in both political criticism and Buddhistic view of life. Remarkably, Watanabe strongly argues that the writer's creativity implies his critical spirit of the political system of the Tokugawa Shogunate. But his argument falls short of tangible evidence. Thus, it is more desirable to presume that Kiyomizumonogatari presents an alternative diagnosis in a Confucian context rather than criticizes the political system of the Tokugawa Shogunate, because the lack in a critical perspective of the actualities fails to offer the ways to improve them and makes no sense. The central idea of Kiyomizumonogatari aims at transforming the Tokugawa Shogunate society into an ideal society based upon a Confucian view of life by seeing into the social actualities for a stable community and introducing a Confucian foundational concept to readers.
