In this study, the recyclability of polyethylene laminated and acrylic emulsion coated papers for beverage containers was evaluated, and the accumulation of pollutants due to recycling of process water was analyzed by repeating the pulping of each raw material up to 20 times. As a result, first, in the case of acrylic emulsion coated paper, the pulper yield was 99%, which was excellent in recyclability. In addition, there was little effect of the acrylic emulsion barrier coating on wet-end process contamination. Second, the pulper yield of the polyethylene laminated paper was 89% excluding the polyethylene layer and some flakes. Most of the polyethylene film was filtered out of the 3 mm hole screen and pulper. And like acrylic emulsion, it has little effect on wet-end contamination. However, it is believed that there still remains a serious environmental load for which waste polyethylene has to be treated. © 2020 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry.
