The intelligibility of speech in university classrooms during lectures

The speech intelligibility tests were performed in 12 university classrooms during 16 lectures in Korea. This is the first speech intelligibility tests and these results are based on natural listening conditions in actual classrooms during lectures with realistic ambient noises at university campus in Korea. The mean trends of the present results indicate that young adult listeners at university have a mean score of 95% correct at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) value of +3 dBA, which is a considerably lower SNR value than for the younger students in elementary schools. The young Korean adult listeners could achieve 95% correct speech intelligibility scores for a SNR value of 3 dBA or higher and for a C-50 value of 8 dB or higher in real classroom situations in university. This is a broad agreement to previous acoustical measurement results for achieving U-50(125-4 k) values of +4.1 dB, indicating 'Good' acoustical conditions for speech intelligibility, but a slightly lower C-50 value.
