The effects of on-line pressured and unpressured planning on speaking and writing task performance

초록

This study aimed to investigate the effects of on-line pressured and unpressured planning on the performance of speaking and writing tasks. Fifty Korean university students, who were learning English as a foreign language, were required to complete both oral and written tasks under pressured and unpressured planning conditions. In the pressured planning condition, participants were given 1 minute for the speaking task and 8 minutes for the writing task, while they could take as much time as they wanted in the unpressured condition. The main findings revealed that, unlike pressured planning time, unpressured planning time resulted in increased complexity in the performance of the writing task, but it did not have a significant effect on the speaking task performance. Furthermore, the unpressured planning time generally had a more positive impact on writing performance compared to speaking performance. The findings suggest that both pressured and unpressured planning conditions can influence English speaking and writing performance, and this influence may be vary depending on the language mode (speaking or writing).(168 words)
