Szczecin, Poland, ISSN 0749-0208 A series of SAR images taken over Jangan sand ridges in Gyunggi Bay, Korea show alternating locations of bright line features according to the tidal conditions. It is found that bright line features appear on the east side of the major axis of sand ridges during flood tide and on the west side during ebb tide. This is because tidal current interaction with bottom topography causes tidal current convergence and divergence zones inducing backscattering variation in the SAR images. In order to validate this mechanism, ROMS numerical circulation model was executed with real bathymetry and boundary conditions at the times of SAR imaging of Jangan sand ridge. It is confirmed that the calculated current convergence zone over the sand ridge coincide with the bright line feature switching its location to both side of the ridge temporarily and spatially according to the tidal phases.
