Mixtures of Mg(OH)<inf>2</inf> and gibbsite, mechanically activated by grinding in a planetary ball mill, were heat treated to obtain MgAl<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf> spinel. Mg(OH)<inf>2</inf> is hardly amorphized and dehydrated by a separate grind. However, when Mg(OH)<inf>2</inf> and gibbsite powders are ground together, rapid amorphization Of Mg(OH)<inf>2</inf> takes place. The formation of MgAl<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf> spinel was significantly enhanced by the mechanical treatment of mixtures. When the mixtures were ground over 30 minutes, single phase MgAl<inf>2</inf>O<inf>4</inf> can be obtained by heat treatment at 800°C for 1h.
