Chemical images and 2D-COS analysis of spin-coated PHBHx/PEG blend films

Domain structure and thermal behavior of spin-coated films of poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHx) (Hx = 3.9 and 13.0 mol%)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (Mw = 3,400) blends were explored using chemical IR images and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) for the first time. Chemical IR images of PHBHx/PEG blend films were measured at different tempera-tures. The temperature-dependent IR spectra extracted from the chemical IR images were also analyzed using 2D-COS. From the chemical IR images, domains were observed in PHBHx/PEG blend films, most especially it was distinctly appeared in 70/30 PHBHx (Hx = 13.0 mol%) blend film. While signi ficant differences of PHBHx/PEG blend films at a molecular level could not be explained by chemical images alone, the effect of PEG on the thermal behavior of PHBHx was clearly explored by 2D-COS. PEG has more in fl uence on the thermal behavior of PHBHx (Hx = 13.0 mol%) than that of PHBHx (Hx = 3.9 mol%). (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.
