Effect of lumbar spine manipulation on hip joint range of motion and pain in rhythmic gymnastics athletes

The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of spinal manipulation on hip joint range of motion. This study followed a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The study included 42 athletes who enrolled in Korea rhythmic gymnastics association. They were randomly divided into an experimental and a control group of 42 athletes each. A manipulation was conducted to an experimental group of 21 athletes in the training class for 10~15 min a day, 1 day a week and a total of 12 weeks. Data were analyzed using the t, Chi-square and paired t-tests. Lumbar spine manipulation demonstrated statistically significant between-group changes in Range of Motion (ROM) of hip, left flexion (p= 0.002), right flexion (p= 0.005), left and right extension (p= 0.001) and visual analog scale (VAS) for perceived pain (p = 0.001). The findings of this preliminary study showed that mid lumbar spinal manipulation improved ROM and visual analog scale (VAS) for perceived pain of participants compared with a no-treatment control groups. Spinal manipulation is an effective intervention that may improve hip joint range of motion and pain for rhythmic gymnastics athletes. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2019.
