A study comparing Korean and Japanese group homes for the elderly

This study aims to provide basic data for creating better conditions in the design of group homes for the elderly in Korea by analyzing and comparing a group home in Korea and one in Japan. Both countries are experiencing population aging and share various cultural and societal traits. After a literature review on group homes in the two nations, on-site examinations and interviews were carried out. This has provided the following results, which can be applied when planning a group home in Korea. First, the capacity of a group home for the elderly in Korea should be set in relation to efficient staff allocation at the facility and the convenience of occupants. Second, private spaces should be located next to a terrace to make the spaces look larger, and communal spaces such as the living room and dining room should be designed to be adjacent to each other as they are closely related. Third, furniture, fabric, and handrails in indoor spaces should be designed in a way to create a home-like atmosphere for occupants. © 2017 International Information Institute.
