The Stain of Living in Eliot’s Metropolitan Landscape

In his poems, “Preludes,” “Rhapsody on a Windy Night,” and “The Boston Evening Transcript,” T. S. Eliot illustrates how the binary opposites are connected and why the true nature of reality is twisted on the streets of a metropolitan city. Eliot’s Metropolitan city-scape reflects his contemporary fuzzy phenomena and his mind-scape. This essay attempts to value the collage technique by undermining the borderline of reality/unreality, time/space, death/life, and liquid/stain in the poetic canvas of urban streets; the poet pastes the various urban landscapes on his poetic canvas. In the three poems, “Preludes,” “Rhapsody on a Windy Night,” and “The Boston Evening Transcript,” the urban streets show the fluidity of mixed memories and desires across the binary oppositions. The essay proves that the urban street plays the duality of reality and unreality at the poem by revealing what the poet experienced and watched in the metropolitan landscape. Eliot’s metropolitan landscape keeps the stain of the virtual life at the actual nights.
