한·중·일 의료기기산업의 비교우위 및 무역패턴 분석

This paper aims to compare the international competitiveness and trade papttern of medical device industry of China, Japan and Korea. This paper first analyzes the international comparative advantage of the medical device industry of China, Japan and Korea from 2002 to 2008, by using Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RCA) and Trade Specialization Index (TSI). The result reveals that all the three countries do not have a comparative advantage in medical device industry as RCA indexes turned out to be under 1. In terms of TSI, Japan and Korea are specialized in import in the medical device industry but China has been specialized in export since 2006. Specifically, Korea has a comparative advantage in four different sub-industries among 36 different sub-medical device industries. In terms of TSI,Korea is specialized in exports of ten sub-industries, while China and Japan are specialized in 15 and 17 industries, respectively. This paper also analyzes a gravity model to assess the determinants of exports of the medical device industry, compared with other industries. The result reveals that home countries' population, partner countries' population, home countries' GDP per capita and distance significantly affect total trade, manufactured trade and medical device trade while common border, landlocked dummy and East Asia dummy do not significantly affect medical device export.
