What do secondary school students- at varying academic achievement levels - know about Korean?: A Study based on the results of 2010～2011 National Assessment of Educational Achievement in Korean

This study aims to analyse what standards secondary school studentsin different academic achievement levels(AAL) achieve in Korean and tofind out the hierarchy of the difficulty of the standards among students. Based on the result of NAEA test, we categorize students' academicachievement level into 4 bands; Advanced, Proficient, Basic, Below Basic. We analysed the results of 2010 & 2011 NAEA Korean which are basedon the same standards within the test framework. This framework followsthe 2007 National Curriculum. Our analysis was conducted in the following procedures; 1) We detectedtest items students in AAL responded correctly more than 74% formultiple-choice items(MCI) & 65% for open-ended items (OEI) in 2 yearsconsecutively. 2) We also reviewed “discriminating items(DI)” amongthose 2-year-achieved-items for more in-depth analysis. DI are itemswhich “a large percentage of students at an achievement level can respondcorrectly to the item whereas at the lower levels cannot” (Beaton et al.,2012:11). 3) Finally we checked correct answer rates of students in onelevel below for those 2-year-achieved-items in order to understand which item was difficult(or easy) to the students in one level below. Followedthese procedures we found that 20 standards were achieved by 3rd graderin middle school and 18 standards by 2nd grader in high school. Wechecked these items's correct answer rate of students in one level belowas well. Therefore we could determine the degree of standards' difficultyto students. Based on these analysed results, we suggested the possiblehierarchy of standards in the national curriculum.
