In order to analyze the seasonal variation of the strength of recycled linerboard, the influence of Stein-Hall starch adhesive used for glueing corrugated containers was checked at the varied temperatures of process water. It has been found that high temperature of process water induces excessive swelling and dissolving of starch adhesives and causes decrease of their retention at wet-end. As a result, the paper produced at high temperature was weaker than the paper produced at low temperature. In this experiment, the compressive strength and the burst strength were decreased at 60°C as much as 10% compared with those at 15°C. Therefore, it was confirmed that the presence of starch adhesive with varied process water temperature was one of the main factors of seasonal linerboard strength change.
