The Influence of `Body Physics' Activity on High-school Students' Motivation for Doing Experiments

초록

The purpose of the study was to develop an inquiry-based activity toteach physics with the human body (Body Physics Activity: BPA) andto explore the influence of BPA on high school studentsmotivation for doing experiments. The participating students wereeleventh-grade students (n=186) of a high school in Seoul, Korea. Inorder to investigate the student perception of the body physicsactivity, we employed a descriptive questionnaire after 4 units ofthe BPA. From the results, we found that the students saw thefollowing positive features of BPA: our own bodies as objects (bodycontext), active participation (participation), simplicity ofexperimental equipment and methods (simplicity), and openness ofexperiment results (openness). In order to examine the influence ofthe BPA on the students motivation for doing experiment, weused a questionnaire on the motivation for the experiment before andafter the units in the experimental group with a body physicactivity (BPA group) and in the control group with textbook physicsexperiments. Subsequently, six students were subjected to asemi-structured interview. The results of the questionnaires showeda significant difference in the motivation for doing the experimentbetween the control group and the BPA group (p.01). According tothe interview results, the students perceived four features -`bodycontext', `participation', `simplicity' and `openness' - to bepositive aspects of BPA: however, a few students perceived`openness' as a negative aspect. The results suggest thatstudents diverse backgrounds and responses are points thatmust be considered for effective implementation of the BPA.
