The lack of shared recognition and widespread confusion in perceptions of “region” among Korean scholars, policymakers, journalists, etc. are the source of problems such as the poor development of nuanced and delicate narratives of “region.” Despite the fact that the terms “Asia-Pacific,” “Northeast Asia,” and “East Asia” have different origins, scopes, and political/economic implications, they tend to be used interchangeably in a variety of literature without clear recognition of distinctions. This article attempts to clarify Korean conceptions of region by sorting out the major concepts that have been employed most frequently in Korea by elaborating the historical backgrounds, strategic considerations, meanings, and political economic implications of each of the three main concepts of “region” in the Korean context.
